Spring Forward… into these Spring Cleaning Tips!

Ahhh, the reappearance of green grass, buds forming on trees, and the slow and steady melt of all that white stuff (we don’t dare say the “s” word – we don’t want to jinx it!). It can only mean one thing: Spring is on its way! It’s time to turn the page on winter and begin fresh, and there’s no better place to start than in your home with a little spring cleaning.
If it feels like a daunting task, don’t worry, you’re not alone. We have you covered with five easy tips to get your home spring-ready.
Look Alive!
The first step to a great spring clean is to just get started, even with one thing. It’s easy to get overwhelmed thinking about all the areas of your home that need tending. So, start small. Pick one room, or one area, to focus on instead of trying to tackle the whole house at once. Make small manageable goals that you can accomplish – this way, you lessen your chances of getting distracted, sidetracked, or throwing in the towel all together (no pun intended).
Look Up
As they say: “out of sight, out of mind” – and that applies to all those sneaky cobwebs! Dust and grime often hide in the places that we don’t think about because it’s above eye level. So make sure that you’re looking “up” when you’ve got your Swiffer out to guarantee that extra level of clean. As a bonus, it’ll also help curb those seasonal allergies caused by lingering dust!
Make sure to clean these areas to ensure you don’t have any secret dust bunnies roosting inside your house:
- Ledges of window and door frames
- Picture frames/wall ornaments
- Smoke and CO2 detectors. Pro tip: take this opportunity to test and/or replace your detectors. Testing should be done twice a year so, if you do it during your fall and spring cleanouts, you’ll end up killing two birds with one stone.
- The interior and exterior of light fixtures
- Blinds, curtains, curtain rods
Look Down
Remember what we said about missing things that aren’t at eye level? That goes for what’s below it too! When it comes to giving your house a spring makeover, it’s easy to overlook the parts that are, sometimes quite literally, right under your nose. Vacuuming, sweeping, and mopping are the obvious go-to’s but don’t forget to wipe down baseboards, outlets, and doorstoppers as well. Especially the ones hiding behind your doors and furniture – that’s a favorite hiding spot for dust and grime.
Look Under
Maybe it’s not the bogeyman under your bed… but that nest of dust bunnies could be almost as scary. Moving your furniture out and cleaning up what’s underneath it is a great way to ensure that nothing is living there that’s not supposed to. You’d be amazed what you can find hibernating under your favorite cozy spot after the winter months!
Taking the time to vacuum your furniture while it’s pulled out is also a great way to remove any lingering dust/crumbs/hair, etc. and prevent additional seasonal build up.
Look Inside
Spring is not only a great time to take inventory of what you have but it’s also the perfect opportunity to get rid of the clutter that’s accumulated during the winter months. Out with the old… and the broken, the expired, the duplicates, the unused… I think you get where we’re going with this. Closets, pantries, drawers, storage spaces, and medicine cabinets are just a few places that accumulate ‘extras’ easily. Take the time to go through them, get rid of what you don’t need, and disinfect your storage space.
The general rule of thumb when it comes to deciding what should stay and what should go is this: is it adding value to your life and/or your home? If the answer is no, then getting rid of it is an easy way to declutter and free up more space for the things that do!
Pro tip: if it’s not expired or broken, consider donating or selling it! What you don’t need could be exactly what someone else is looking for and you could end up with a little extra cash in your pocket… or just a little emotional boost. And who doesn’t need that, right?
