Fall in Love… With Your Home!

You probably remember it like it was yesterday – you took your first steps inside your home and BAM! Love at first sight! Or, if it wasn’t love at first sight, you saw a place that was worth investing time and effort into… a slow burn for the ages!

But just like most relationships, if you don’t tend to it, you’ll start to find that the ‘sparkle’ will begin to fade. Your home should reflect your personal tastes and what you like and value. Of course, this will change and grow over time – but that’s okay! We’re not stagnant creatures and your home shouldn’t be either!

Rekindle your love affair with your home with these five easy tips:

Tip 1: Play 10 Minutes in Heaven

Okay, we admit, we might be taking our liberties with our variation on this classic game… but your home can become a paradise when you invest time in making it the way you envision it.

Take 10 minutes to improve your home in a way that feels good to you. Polish the stainless steel. Swiffer your floor. Organize your pantry or the junk drawer. Little things add up to big changes – and you’ll be amazed at what 10 minutes here and there can do in the long run!

Tip 2: If You Don’t Like It… Change It!

Even when something isn’t working for us the way it used to, it’s hard for us to actively change it. We’re creatures of habit and we get comfortable, even if what we’re comfortable with isn’t bringing us joy anymore.

But remember, a little change never hurt anyone. If there’s a room or a space in your home that you’re not loving, or even if it’s just starting to feel a bit boring, try spicing it up!

Rearrange your furniture or bust out those new shelves that have been sitting in the back of your closet.

Or, if that’s feeling a touch too ambitious, start easy and move around the smaller pieces and accessories in your home. Put out a special keepsake as a new centerpiece, invest in a cool piece of art, or display that blanket that Grandma knitted you. If you love it, show it off – it’s a simple and easy way to brighten up your home.

Tip 3: “Scent” the Mood

Breathe in… breathe out. If what just flooded your nostrils was more of a ‘buzz kill’ then a ‘mood setter’, then it’s time to up your household aroma game.

One of the easiest mood elevators is tied to our sense of smell… so find scents that you like and use candles, wax melts or diffusers to add inviting fragrances to your home. A place that smells good feels good. Trust us on this!

Tip 4: Break Up with Your Old Junk

Oh nostalgia… it has us keeping things that we don’t value or even want anymore! Do yourself a favor and call it quits on the items that are only adding clutter to your home space. If you don’t need it, use it, or love it… what is it still doing here?! Let it go!

Go into the area of your house that is causing you the most distress and give yourself 15 minutes to collect the items you no longer love. Once you have your pile of no longer used knickknacks sorted, separate them into three groups:

1) things to sell

2) things to donate

3) things to throw out.

Then voila! Enjoy the freedom that comes from having those clingy items out of your house and off your mind.

Tip 5: State Your Intentions

Not many things feel worse than feeling like you ‘have’ to do something that you would really rather not do. We’ve all been there, right?

One of the best things that you can do when it comes to any arduous task is focusing on the ‘why’ factor. What’s motivating you do get this done? Why do you, personally, want a clean or organized home?

Some people want an inviting space to socialize with their friends and family in. Some want a healthy and tidy home for their children. Some like the feeling that comes with accomplishing a task and doing it well. Whatever that reason is for you, keep it in mind as you move towards getting things done. It can help turn tasks from chores to accomplishments.
