Home is Where the Gratitude Is

There’s something truly breath-taking about October, wouldn’t you agree?
It’s change in motion, the final bits of transition that welcome warm autumn colors, the crunch of foliage under boots, and crisp morning air that is an invigorating start to any day. Moments like these are daily reminders that there is truly so much to be grateful for.
Extending that attitude of gratitude into your own home is a great way to celebrate where you are and what you have. This month, we honor that by giving you three ways to fall in love with your home all over again.
Integrate Seasonal Décor
Fall is one of the most beautiful times of the year with all those hues of orange, red, and yellow. Bringing that palette into your home is a great way to add softness and warmth into your everyday routine and is also perfect decoration for celebrating the seasonal events coming up.
Pumpkins, gourds, and faux leaves can be put on the mantel or dining table for a perfect centerpiece.
Exchange your kitchen and dining room linens for ones that are more fall appropriate, an easy way to add pops of color and texture to your home with minimal effort.
Infuse your home with the smells of autumn by switching out the scents in your diffuser to ones that incorporate cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, or pumpkin spice. Or, for a DIY alternative, add a stick of cinnamon and a tablespoon of cloves to a small pot with a couple of cups of water and let it boil, uncovered, for 15 minutes.
Get the kids involved by letting them create some of the outdoor decorations that will go up around your home. Carving or painting pumpkins is a staple that will light up the front of your house for the spooky season. Or, for a cute and easy crafting alternative, spooky luminaries only require paper bags, a pair of scissors, and votive candles to make them shine.
Give Walls Some TLC
From oily post-costume handprints to the splatters of kitchen grease when you were trying that new Thanksgiving recipe, walls see a lot of action throughout the year. And let’s be real, white-erase markers will only get you so far!
Fall is the perfect time to give back to your walls by giving them the touch up that they need.
To start, dust your walls from the top down. You can use a soft-bristled broom to reach high areas and a dry microfiber cloth to dust the areas within your reach. If you have a vacuum with a brush attachment, you can also go that route for a more thorough dusting.
Once that’s done and dusted (pun very much intended), you can get started on the wipe down.
Fill two buckets: one with warm water and the other with four parts water and one part wall cleaner.
The wall cleaner that you should use will vary depending on the type of paint used in your home, but we recommend using gentle and affordable cleaning agents such as dish soap or white vinegar.
Using a sponge, take your cleaning solution and start applying it to the walls using light circular motions. Wipe off any residue with a sponge dipped in plain warm water before patting the wall dry with a microfiber cloth. Then its as easy as moving on to the next section.
Oh, did we mention what a great canvas a clean wall makes for a fresh coat of paint? If you’re looking for a way to freshen up your home, or get it back to its days of pre-move-in glory, consider incorporating new colors, finishes, or patterns that’ll really make it shine.
Revamp Your Garage
There are some cool mornings now but even colder temperatures will be on their way as we head into the winter months. While that might not inspire a lot of gratitude, having a warm and frost-proof garage will definitely do the trick as you make your way through the changing seasons.
Insulating the walls and ceiling ensures that your garage will be more climate controlled, protecting you and your car from all kinds of unpredictable weather. Add weather stripping on the bottom and sides of your door(s) to reduce drafts and escaping heat.
Once you’re done with the practical stuff, that’s when the real fun can begin!
Garages are often thought of as being drab and boring, a place to park the car and store all the miscellaneous items that have accumulated over the summer months. They’re the neglected spaces, especially when it comes to design.
Embrace the idea of change and transition by livening up your garage with a pop of color. This could mean incorporating a bright accent wall, installing fun patterned flooring, or painting existing cabinets an eye-catching shade.
Brightening up your garage could be as simple as renovating your organization systems and making more space for your vehicle, but it could involve transforming it into the new space that you’ve always wanted. A guest room? A home gym? A new DIY space or home office? Let fall inspire the thoughtfulness and change that your home is truly worthy of.
